A lot of work goes into telling the stories of success and opportunity within York Region’s business community. Through news, events, and data there is always something of interest to share from the more than 57,000+ businesses that call this place home. This means everything from being active on our social media channels daily to connect with businesses and talent, delivering our monthly e-newsletter, to ensuring the website is up-to-date and accessible, and more. But how does this storytelling happen and who is behind it?
Well, we’re finally back with a new team spotlight and it gives you a look into Nathan Allen. He leads the social media for our Investment & Marketing team both behind-the-scenes and occasionally in front of the camera too! As the Web and Social Media Communications Specialist, his role involves managing our website, social media content, and other marketing campaigns to tell the business community story of York Region, where talent and opportunity intersect.
Let’s see what he has to say about his role and experience being on the Economic Development team for the past seven years.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do on the Economic Development team?
The main purpose of my job is to promote York Region as a great place for business in the Greater Toronto Area and as highly sought-after destination for talent to live and work. As a jack-of-all trades I do many different things that support this primary goal, including managing our social media channels and website (with support from other talented team members), developing our monthly e-newsletter, graphic design support, and more. And I’m fortunate that I even get to occasionally go out and work alongside our Business Advisors with marketing and communications advice when they meet with businesses in the Region.
Given you do many things, if you had to say, what would your favorite part of the job be?
The variety. I am fortunate to be in a position where I get to work on a lot of different projects and do a lot of different things with great people. This includes at the Region and with the businesses and other partners we deal with on a regular basis. Like many others on our team have said, no day is ever alike, and that keeps things interesting for me.
Life isn’t all about work, what do you like to do outside of it?
On the day-to-day, I’m very much a homebody and enjoy spending time in our backyard and around the house walking and playing with our dog, but when it’s finally time to get out and do something my partner and I love to travel abroad. We typically plan road trips to try and see as much of a new country as we can. The planning and organizing of these trips provide just as much entertainment for me as the trip itself.
Thanks for sitting down with us, is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself before we wrap up?
When I was younger, I volunteered with a music magazine – now defunct, but it was a ton of fun. I’d get to write album reviews, attend lots of concert and write reviews. I was also fortunate to even have the opportunity to interview some of my favorite bands. Looking back on it now, I was developing some of the skills I use in my job today without even realizing it.
