Key Ingredients to the Success of York Region’s Autotech Ecosystem: Industry Leaders, Infrastructure, and Talent

With a combination of an industry-leading auto parts manufacturing base, a high concentration of automotive head offices and an Autotech ecosystem building for the future of transportation. York Region’s automotive sector is well-positioned to continue to innovate and make substantial contributions to Canada’s and North America’s automotive industry of the future.

It was recently stated by the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing that York Region is one of the largest and most comprehensive Autotech ecosystems in North America and the largest automotive innovation hub in Canada. For this reason and many others, it is not surprising that this fast-growing Region in the Toronto Area also includes the highest number of automotive industry Canadian and global head offices in the country.

With Canadian auto firms for companies such as BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, and Volvo, the market is showing us that industry leaders place themselves here for a reason. In comparison to other Autotech jurisdictions across North America, York Region consistently comes out on top. Why?

We’re one of only two locations in North America with all the needed critical competencies across electric vehicle (EV) tech, connected and autonomous tech, software/hardware development, electronics manufacturing, and a burgeoning cluster companies focused on the future of transportation (also known as Industry 4.0).

This established and growing foundation – vital to continued industry growth – is what sets York Region apart. The Region’s ecosystem has the industry leaders, infrastructure, high-skilled talent pool, and ideas to push the next generation of tech and automotive integration forward.

Industry Leaders in York Region

A strong automotive ecosystem relies on a mix of innovative startups and established companies in the sector to drive innovation and real-world implementation. York Region has a solid mix of companies contributing to the local, national, and global automotive ecosystem.

Magna International, one of North America’s largest parts manufacturers, along with Multimatic, Martinrea, and others, have their global headquarters located in the Region. These companies test innovative designs along with additional R&D related to autotech and traditional parts manufacturing at these regional-based facilities.

In 2021, Tesla opened its first branded Canadian battery manufacturing factory in the Region. A step they took after acquiring the innovative Richmond Hill headquartered company Hibar a few years prior, which produced pumps used in fast-speed battery assembly. As the inaugural Canadian Tesla manufacturing facility, they’ll produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment for use around the world including the first Tesla vehicles with 4680 batteries.

General Motors chose to establish their most recent Canadian Technical Centre – Markham Campus in York Region because of the talent pool and connectivity available here. The Markham Campus is Canada’s largest automotive innovation hub and has been scaling up to over 700 software engineers since its grand opening in 2018. The facility supports work on GM’s advanced driver assistance features, its fully autonomous vehicle program, and infotainment software.

Infrastructure for Growth

Thinking about the importance of hardware and semiconductor tech to the automotive sector? ventureLAB, a regional innovation centre in York Region, is home to the Hardware Catalyst Initiative (HCI), the only hardware and semiconductor technology lab and incubator in Canada.

As dependence on semiconductor technology steadily increases in the automotive sector, having this one-of-a-kind program and laboratory makes York Region a major asset to companies looking to take advantage of the extensive equipment available to test new products, tap into partnerships with innovative start-ups, and more.

As a vital part of Canada’s tech ecosystem, the HCI continues to receive federal and provincial investments to further expand its capabilities and service offerings. Additionally, York Region is highly connected with access to the 400 series highways, transit, and rail terminals for end-to-end supply chain access.

Highly Skilled Talent Pool

A key element that draws businesses to the Region is the highly skilled talent pool available, which is vast and growing; 20% of the GTA’s STEM and business graduates currently live in York Region. There is also access to 18 public colleges and universities within reasonable driving proximity.
