FINTECH IN YORK REGION
York Region’s tech sector is one of the largest in Canada employing over 60,000 professionals at over 4,300 technology companies. Home to the second largest Financial, Insurance and Accounting Services cluster in Ontario, York Region has over 2,900 businesses and approximately 40,000 sector related jobs.
This much anticipated event will provide an understanding of the breadth and depth of York Region’s FinTech space, its technology, and its talent.
A LOOK BACK
In 2016, the York Region FinTech Summit attendees engaged with local high-growth financial technology companies and learned from industry discussions. Speakers included representation from PayPal Canada, OMERS Ventures, MaRS, Ernst & Young, RBC and more.
This first FinTech Summit in Toronto Area’s York Region brought together a wide range of attendees and perspectives from across the FinTech and banking industries. People left wanting more and that’s why we’re back in 2018 with the next chapter of this great event!

Chloé James | Group Media Director, RFi Group
Chloé James is the Group Media Director for global strategic insights partner RFi Group and a Broadcast Television Presenter, Speaker, MC and Host specialising in business, banking & traditional financial services, fintech, technology and entrepreneurship. In 2016 Chloé joined Sky News Business as the Host of live and nationally broadcast programs Business Success, Summer Money, TECH. biz and The Enterprise.
Chloé works extensively in the corporate speaking arena as a conference MC as well as moderating and facilitating panel sessions and C-level fireside conversations. She is passionate about financial literacy, the unbanked, inclusion and diversity and uncovering the behind-the-scenes stories of successful business minds.
In 2014 Chloé created a global Women in Leadership interview series and was a judge in the ‘FINNIE’ FinTech Awards and Australian Government’s Office for Women ‘Inspiring Mentoring Scholarships Program’ for emerging female entrepreneurs. She is a Global Ambassador for Inspiring Rare Birds, an organisation supporting and encouraging entrepreneurship amongst women around the world; women rising and succeeding in business is a subject close to her heart.
The keynote will speak to the World Economic Forum’s new report on the impact of AI on financial services, as financial institutions around the world face growing competitive pressure to make major strategic investments in AI and policy makers seek to navigate the challenging regulatory and social uncertainties emerging globally.
Denizhan Uyker | Strategy Consultant, Monitor Deloitte
Denizhan focuses on financial services strategy and transformation initiatives, and has worked with leading banking, insurance, and wealth management institutions from across North America. Denizhan was a lead author of the World Economic Forum’s recent report ‘The New Physics of Financial Services’, examining the role of Artificial Intelligence in financial services, and is a frequent speaker on topics related to the future of financial services.
This panel will address the dramatic shifts caused by enhanced mobility and IoT and focus on competitive and collaborative strategies for FinTech success.
Mark Ripplinger | President & CEO, Everlink
Mark has been leading Everlink’s broad portfolio in the highly competitive payments solutions business since October, 2007, serving over 94% of credit unions, 30% of schedue 1 & 2 banks as well as 15,000 merchants and 5 million cardholders across Canada – connecting them all worldwide via numerous payment networks.
With a wealth of experience and expertise in business and IT leadership, Mark has held key executive positions in several leading companies all across Canada – as a CIO for over 17 years, and as a CEO for over 10 years.

Liv is a B2B marketing expert who specializes in demand-generation and digital marketing. Her focus is primarily on both Financial Services and Consumer Packaged Goods Industries.
Oscar Roque| AVP, Mobile Platform & Products, Interac Corp.
Oscar is the AVP, Mobile Platform and Products at Interac responsible for the digital commerce and blockchain strategies. Previous to joining Interac, Oscar led strategy development and innovation in FinTech partnerships across several business areas including Retail Payments, Channels, and Personal/Small Business banking for a major financial institution. Oscar speaks frequently to diverse groups about innovation and emerging technologies and has a passion for forward-thinking designs.
Steve McPhee | Head, Business Development & Partnerships, Square Canada
Steve McPhee is the Head of Business Development and Partnerships at Square Canada. Steve’s team is responsible for working with network and FI partners as well as growing channel marketing partnerships. Prior to Square Steve worked in packaged goods marketing and was a tech entrepreneur. Steve has been at Square for over 4 years helping entrepreneurs scale their businesses and ensure it is easy for them to get paid.

Jeff Keats | District Manager, Export Development Canada
Jeff Keats is a District Manager for Export Development Canada (“EDC”). As District Manager in the Toronto market, Jeff leads a team of talented and dynamic EDC Account Managers that are helping Canadian companies go, grow, and succeed internationally. EDC offers Canadian companies the financial and risk mitigation tools, trade expertise and market connections that help them capitalize on international business opportunities. EDC also works with a variety of banking, government, and other partners to achieve our mandate of enabling Canadian companies do more business internationally.
Bhupinder Randhawa | Partner, Bereskin & Parr LLP
Bhupinder Randhawa is a partner, lawyer, patent and trademark agent with Bereskin & Parr LLP. He is head of the Electrical & Computer Technology practice group, and co-leader of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) practice group. Bhupinder’s practice focuses on patent and technology law, particularly obtaining, evaluating and leveraging intellectual property rights for high technology clients.
This panel will address various AI applications for FinTech with a specific focus on automated customer services, predictive analysis, fraud detection, and wealth management.
Lisa Durnford | Associate, BMO Capital Markets
Lisa is an Associate in BMO Capital Market’s Anti-Money Laundering Regulatory Compliance Management Group, and was formerly VP Product Development at a legal technology firm applying AI to automate legal document review. Lisa also co-chairs Venture Out, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting LGBTQA+ people in tech and entrepreneurs to career opportunities, mentors and each other. She is fascinated by the ethical and regulatory challenges of emerging technologies and the importance of diversity with respect to building ethical and accessible AI.
Mick Bhinder | CEO & Founder, IAmI Authentications, Inc.
After many years of working in the financial services sector (Amex, Discover Financial Services, Visa and TD Bank), Mick began his entrepreneurial journey over 8 years with two prior startups before IAmI.
Mick has always been front and centre at the crossroads of modern technologies and securing private & sensitive data.
Daniel Cascone | Partner, IBM Global Business Services
Daniel is a Partner in IBM Global Business Services with over 20 years of experience in solution and delivery of solutions for transformation and complex business problems including digital banking, advanced analytics, process automation and back office enablement.
He is passionate in driving innovation and change through the adoption of emerging technologies, methods, and tools. This includes leading the IBM Canada FSS x-tech team with the goal of identifying solutions for IBM product development or establishing key industry partnerships including leaders in AI, IOT, Robotics, Blockchain, and Cloud.
Don Waugh | CEO, Applied Recognition Inc.
Don Waugh is Co-CEO of Applied Recognition a face recognition company and is Chairman of the Board of AceAge a medical device company. Previously he was the Founder of PharmaTrust which is revolutionizing the dispensing and management of prescription medicine under the name Medavail.
In Don’s 25-plus years as an entrepreneur he was also the Founder of Echoworx Corporation – an encryption security software company specializing in Internet based applications, CoolWater/CIMtegration – an internet development firm, and DataVation – a data storage company.
Don is a multi-patent holder for encryption technologies, drug dispensing systems and face recognition applications.
