The front fields of Willowgrove Farm along McCowan Road had been home to traditional farming crops like corn and soybeans for decades. But if you drive now or drop your child off at Willowgrove Day Camp or Willowgrove Nature School, you will see something different.

Gone are the tractors and the corn stalks — they have been replaced by native plants like the black walnut tree, eastern cottonwood tree and red elderberry. For Ravi Gukathasan, the 27 acres at Willowgrove represent the biggest area yet for his latest experiment. A chemical scientist by trade, Gukathasan founded the custom chemical company DSC, which he sold, and in his retirement has taken up 220KM Inc.

The project aims to convert the landscape into a self-sustainable ecosystem, using regenerative practices and native flora, Gukathasan said.
