Newmarket – Employment continues to outpace national, provincial and Greater Toronto Area averages, establishing York Region as Ontario’s fastest growing large municipality and third largest business hub.
York Region continues to grow at a steady pace, securing jobs for more than 615,000 people. Between 2016 and 2017 a total of 19,780 new jobs were created, representing a 3.3 per cent increase year-over-year.
The findings from the 2017 Employment and Industry Report provide a positive economic overview of business and job growth in York Region. The report is based on a survey extended to 33,650 businesses, each with a physical office location in York Region. The respondents represent businesses of varying sizes, industries and locations throughout all nine local cities and towns.
“York Region has an established presence as an international business centre, a hub for global headquarters and a welcoming home to start-ups,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The Employment and Industry Report findings are valuable to continue to guide York Regional Council in the development of policies, programs and infrastructure investments for driving economic growth.”
Additional report highlights include:
- Key knowledge-based services sectors in York Region continue to experience strong job growth, specifically technology and financial services
- The professional, scientific and technical services sector added over 1,800 jobs in 2017 representing the second-highest share of services-producing industry employment in York Region
- York Region continues to attract the attention of world-class global organizations with the Region recently shortlisted as a potential location for Amazon’s second headquarters as the result of bid by Toronto Global – with the Greater Toronto Area as the only Canadian location being considered
