Convertus breaks ground on East Gwillimbury biofuel plant

The East Gwillimbury project, set to open in 2027, will process organic waste via anaerobic digestion into biogas, and later, renewable natural gas. The RNG will offset fossil natural gas in local pipelines.

Convertus, an organic waste processor will build the province’s first large-scale biofuel facility with liquid carbon capture technology. The new facility will go up on a 12-acre site next to York Region’s Materials Recovery and Transfer Facility. It’s expected to save 15,000 tonnes of transportation related CO2 emissions which could’ve come from trucking the waste long distances.
